www – Wind, Winter-kill, Winners

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (May 8, 2010) While Al Gore may have arguably “created the internet”, he surely has no answer for the Oklahoma Tours version of WWW.

Wind – Tahlequah’s Mike Johnson asked me after the round, “will we ever play a round without wind”? For the record I’ve spent 9 days on the course this year, including the Majors at Barton Creek and TPC Deere Run and have had only 1 day without 15+mph. So while I’m currently 1-9, the odd’s have got to be for a few good days coming our way.

Winter-kill – Tulsa golf courses certainly took a beating over the winter with the cold weather, the spring has not helped with the sustained warmth needed for Bermuda grass to start the germination process. Our next event is in Grove on June 5th and they report NO winter-kill, so hopefully by the time we get to Cherokee Hills on June 19th they will have had a rebound of the fairways.

Winners - With the exception of Stigler’s, Chris Blankenship, who took home the Hogan Flight honors all the other winners have been multiple podium finishes this year. Curt Howard, Sapulpa, two in a row in the Championship Flight. Tulsa’s Roland Lewis has three Oklahoma Events in a row and all of the local events he’s played in. Bill Copeland, from Tulsa also has three in a row and all the Oklahoma events he participated in and Fairview’s, K.C Montgomery is two for three events winning the Tournament Champion, presented by Labor Finders in both of those victories.

Results:

Championship Flight – Curt Howard, from Sapulpa made it two in a row with 3 over 75 with a birdie, birdie finish, 5 stokes clear of Claremore’s Brad Kerr. Kerr in three outings has one win and two seconds played the tough back nine 1 over par. First time player Brandon Henry from Pauls Valley had a strong start with 1 under par through the first 5 holes but ran into trouble after that.

Palmer Flight –Despite a 4 over par 9 on the 11th hole, Tulsa’s Roland Lewis depended on his 1 over first nine to take him to a 4 stroke win over Lawton’s Brad Cooper. David McDaniel from Broken Arrow started strong with an even par front nine with two birides but faded on the back nine to end 4th behind Brook Lister of Tulsa.

Hogan Flight – Stigler’s, Chris Blankenship shot a 7 over par 79 to take home the first win of his Golf Channel Am Tour career with a 3 stroke advantage over Todd Chapman of Tulsa. Newcomer Austin Case, from Edmond played a solid round with woes on the 18th that took him out of contention.

Senior Hogan Flight - Three time winner Bill Copeland finished with a stout 3 over 39 on the back to take home another flight trophy. Cheyenne’s Allan Barnett, a Sarazen player that was a victim of the numbers finished 2nd and Mike Johnson of Tahlequah finished in the show position.

Jones Flight – K.C. Montgomery, coming off a west coast swing with play in the San Diego area had a career 2nd best round of 82 to bring home the Jones Flight and Tournament Champion Trophy. Stillwater, OK's Ryan Cummings shot a 4 over 40 on the front to finish with a photo finish 83 with Kingfisher’s Ron Walker and Oklahoma City’s Gary Chrisman rounding out the top 5.
