Recap - Payne Stewart Classic - 2010

Scott R. Chilcutt, Branson, MO (May 23, 2010) TPC Sawgrass and National Championship qualification was on everyone’s mind when they arrived at the Payne Stewart Classic on Friday, May 21st.   Many of our Oklahoma group set out on practice rounds trying to get a feel for the Chuck Smith, Bobby Clampett design.

Beautiful weather, tough thick roughs and excellent competition landed 5 Oklahoma Players with National qualifications.


Championship Flight – 13 Players

Brad Christianson, Tulsa, OK - In his event round on the tour, Brad played two strong 78’s to finish 3rd.

Senior Palmer Flight – 9 Players

Mel Yates, Texhoma, TX – After winning the Texas Open at Barton Creek and his National qualification in the bag a final round of 79 kept Mel in the runner up position taking home more Dick’s Sporting Goods gift certificates.

Jones Flight – 9 Total Players

Jimmy Smethers, Stigler, OK – His first Major attempt Jimmy held on to the 2nd spot with to consistent rounds.

Senior Jones Flight – 12 Players

Shug Shuggart, Burneyville, OK – Another runner up finish for the Oklahoma Tour, Shug qualified for the National Championship in only his second start.

Snead Flight – 9 Players   

Loyd Welch, McAlester, OK – Snead Flight Champion at the Texas Open @ Barton Creek, Loyd won in a playoff over St. Peters, MO. Player David Small to take his 2nd Major in as many tries.
