Sunday, Sunday - The Open @ Coffee Creek

Sunday, Sunday!

So good to me!

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (April 25, 2010) Known as “Papa John”, John Phillips wrote and arranged Monday, Monday for the Mama’s and Papa’s in 1966. As I made my final site visit to Coffee Creek on Saturday April 24, I immediately thought of the melody while greeting players that had arrived for the April 25th (Sunday) event a day early.

The lyrics, from the only #1 song by the Mama’s and Papa’s to hit the billboard top 100, started with “Monday, Monday, so good to me, Monday mornin’ it was all I hoped it would be”

Edmond, OK’s G. Bob Fraley might have been humming the melody on his way home as he fought off a rough start to the day to bring home the Snead Flight honors with a strong back nine shooting a 94. His triumphant finish brought with it the Tournament Championship trophy, presented by Labor Finders.

Lawton’s, Brad Cooper, Chad Coogle from Bethany and The Cowboy Classic, Tournament Champion, Fairview’s K.C. Montgomery, all finished the day tied with Dr. Fraley at 4 over, net 74’s, but G. Bob prevailed in the 4 scorecard playoff to bring home the glass and sing Sunday, Sunday so good to me on his short drive to his Edmond home!

Results:

Championship FlightCurt Howard, from Sapulpa, OK, in only his 2nd event on the tour, made the field at the last minute (when Todd Chapman’s 102 degree temperature keep him on the sidelines) and won the event by edging out Checotah’s James Fowler by a stroke. In spite of the 3 over back nine, with a birdie and skin on the tough par 3 – 14th, Fowler couldn’t stay ahead of the consistent Howard who shot a 9 over 79.

Palmer Flight –After winning 3 events in 2009, Lawton, OK’s Brad Cooper picked up his first win of the year with a strong 82. Despite a tough finish, Cooper started the day at 1 over par through 6 holes and led wire to wire over Broken Arrow, OK’s David McDaniel. McDaniel took home a skin with a birdie on the par 3, 11th when he drained a putt, despite Fowler's near hole in one that created a two putt par.

Hogan Flight – Seven players finished within 5 strokes of first time winner, Bethany, OK’s Chad Coogle. Runner up, Mike Johnson from Tahlequah, OK, finished with strong pars on the tough 17th and 18th holes but was only able to keep pace with Coogle who edged him out by one stroke. Johnson and Tahlequah partner Christian Abels made the trip after the Arkansas Tour's tournament canceled because of rain. From Lawton, OK, Jack Champagne’s 3rd event brought home some gift certificates: he has yet to finish out of the top three in his first year on tour.

Jones Flight – Stillwater, OK's Ryan Cummings and Jimmy Smethers from Stigler, OK continue an epic battle for wins. In three Oklahoma Tour Events, Cummings has won 2 (by one stroke) and Smethers has one win (by one stroke). Cummings' par on the 16th resulted in a 3 shot swing to bring home the hardware. Smethers bested Burneyville, OK’s newcomer Shug Shuggart by one stroke to keep the 2nd place prize. A retired photographer, Shuggart, in his first event on tour, birdied the par 4 – 2nd for one of his 3 skins on the day.

Snead Flight – Fairview, OK, resident K.C. Montgomery’s triple bogie 7 on the final par 4-18th proved to be the difference when G. Bob Fraley finished with a bogie to win the flight by two strokes. This was Fraley’s first win since hurricane type winds during the April 2009 event at Lincoln Park.
