Arkansas vs. Oklahoma Tour - Part I
OK 4 flight winners – AR 3 flight winnersScott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (March 27, 2010) Strong south winds, threatening afternoon thunderstorms and a soggy golf course challenged the players in the first installment of the Arkansas vs. Oklahoma Tour Challenge.
The Oklahoma Tour finished the day in the lead over Arkansas, 4-3 in Flight Wins after Saturdays Arklahoma Open @ Fianna Hills Country Club in Fort Smith Arkansas. Arkansas ended the day edging out Oklahoma, 6-5 in total medals with 3 runner up awards against 1 by Oklahoma.
The next and final chapter in the 2010 Arkansas vs. Oklahoma Tour Challenge will be competed at The Grand Lake Showdown on June 5th at Patricia Island Estates and Golf Club, Grove OK.
Flight Winners:
Championship Flight – Patrick Runions from Rogers, AR, picked up his 6th Golf Channel Amateur win besting Pea Ridge, AR , Stacey Shiew by 2 strokes. Shiew got it to within one stroke with one to play but couldn’t make up the difference on the tough 18th hole. Runions’ birdie on the par 4 – 4th hole that played as the third hardest hole of the day with 1.40 over par contributed to his 3 skins.
Palmer Flight – Tied after 16 holes, Edmond, OK’s Brook Lister, in only his 2nd event on tour, bested Wayne Baldwin of Russellville, AR by one stroke with a par, par finish. Pars on the 1st by Baldwin and the 8th by Lister gave them skins in the Champ / Palmer group.
Hogan Flight – 29 year old Jack Champagne of Lawton OK, teeing off at the par 4 – 17th with a 3 shot lead hung on to win by a stroke over Rogers, AR’s Fred Martin. Starting off strong with a tournament best 2 over par on the front 9, Tulsa, OK’s David Shales struggled in the soggy bottom of the back 9 to finish 2 strokes out of medal position.
Senior Hogan Flight - With a solid 4 over par front 9, Edmond, OK resident, Michael Hicks hung on to take the gold medal over Tahlequah, OK’s Mike Johnson and Chris Abels by a stroke. Johnson’s par 4 on the 17th hole landed him runner up awards in a scorecard playoff.
Sarazen Flight – Shooting a solid round of 83, Muldrow, OK’s Kirby Rogers, playing out of the Arkansas tour, led wire to wire to give him his 4th win of the 2010 season over 2nd place finisher Jay Williams of Van Buren, AR.
Jones Flight – Stillwater, OK newcomer Ryan Cummings, in only his 2nd event, took home the gold over first time player Michael Petersen of Ozark, AR. Petersen ended the day with 2 skins behind Tulsa OK’s Scott Bundrick and Stigler, OK native, Jimmy Smethers, who both had 3 each.
Snead Flight – St. Peters, MO traveler David Small couldn’t overcome a tough start on the first hole and finished runner up to 32 year old, Rogers, AR native Dwight Baker. Baxter with his 2nd win of the 2010 season leads the Arkansas Snead Flight Callaway Order of Merit points.
