Fast Pace, Fast Greens, Hot with plenty of Shade Trees

Recap - Edmond Summer Classic
Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (July 25, 2010) Despite the groups of five scheduled into the front of our starting times, players maintained a scorching pace on the 6,700 yard par 70 Kicking Bird Golf Club. The first groups finished in just minutes over 4 hours and even the last groups rallied to the 18th hole in under 4 ½.

Fast greens and great conditions on arguably one of the most played courses in the area gave way to great scoring for those that could stay out of trouble, most notably the trees. While those trees were welcome while waiting to play the shots, they cost a number of strokes for players that found there balls in those areas.

Both Ron Walker from Crescent and Yukon’s Jerry Hardin’s Tournament Champion hopes came down to a scorecard playoff. After the calculations were completed Walker prevailed shooting a season low 82, gross 66 for the hardware presented by Labor Finders.

Results:

Championship Flight – No scorecard playoffs here, 30 year old Pauls Valley resident Brandon Henry and Checotah’s James Fowler had to return to the first tee to unknot a tie at 1 over par 70. Fowler played the back nine in one over par, finishing the tough par 4, 18th with par saving wizardry after finding those shade trees on his tee shot. In the end, Henry with his first win of the season, prevailed in a 4 hole playoff. Brandon’s birdies on the 2nd and 13th helped keep him in the running until the end. Tulsa’s Douglas Duke had an eagle on 12 and birdied 15 and 16 to finish with a 75 a few strokes ahead of Brad Kerr from Claremore.

Palmer Flight – Sudden death playoffs continued when Tulsa’s Brook Lister shot 4 over par on the back nine to catch Darren Montgomery from Oklahoma City to even the score cards at 78. Lister prevailed on the 1st hole of the playoff to take his 2nd win of the season. Montgomery in his best finish of the year bested Broken Arrow’s David McDaniel by two strokes.

Hogan Flight – Often used in auto racing, “you could throw a blanket over the finishers” was certainly appropriate over the top 5. Tulsa’s Todd Chapman won his 4th tournament of the year by one 2 strokes over the top 5 on the leader board. Jeff Banner from Lawton had his 2nd, 2nd in the last two events just missing out by a stroke and Edmond’s Tim Mathis, Stigler’s Chris Blankenship and Scott Word from Bethany finished two back with 81’s.

Senior Hogan Flight – Riding the momentum of midsummer top finishes with a 2nd at Forest Ridge and a 3rd place finish at the Texas Masters, Michael Hicks from Edmond topped the SR Hogan’s with a 7 over par 77 besting Tahlequah’s Jim Crawford with multi tournament winner Bill Copeland from Tulsa rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight – Birdie on the par 5 – 12th proved to be the difference in Jerry Hardin’s 2nd win of the season over Ron Walker from Crescent and Broken Bow’s Mark Helms. Recently promoted Snead Player, Walker finished T2 with his low round of the year with Burneyville’s Shug Shugart three strokes behind.

Snead Flight – Fairview’s K.C. Montgomery finished the par 70 layout with a 14 over 84, besting Tulsa’s Scott Bundrick by 5 strokes. Rick Henthorn from Yukon, new comer Canadian, TX’s Curt McPherson and John Moore from Ardmore, nursing a elbow injury finish out the top 5 spots. Montgomery started off strong with 6 over at the turn held on to notch his 3rd win of the season.
