Emerald Falls Championship - Recap

Tunnel To Trouble

Scott R Chilcutt, Broken Arrow, OK (April 2, 2011)   After a one year abscense by the Golf Channel Am Tour from the Emerald Falls Golf Club, those familiar were reminded and those new to the layout were educated on the tunnel that joins the course by the South 305th East Avenue division.  Heading west is trouble, but after you've finished the batch of holes the east bound ride is welcome.

The first three holes of the championship, par 72 layout tend to give you a false sense of security, then when you head back towards the clubhouse the 4th hole picks up in difficutly, but nothing like the drive around the pond at 18 and under the street to meet the 5,6,7 and 8th holes.  Of the four holes only 1 birdie was carded out of the 42 golfers and in that stretch the stroke average was 1.825 over par.  The 8th hole was the toughest playing 2.48 strokes over par and in the 4 holes over 54% of the scores were double bogie or higher.

Kirby Rogers picked up the Tournament Championship Trophy, presented by Labor Finders wth a net 72.  Rogers weathered the 4th -7th holes with pars but found trouble with a triple on 8th.

Next UP - Forest Ridge Classic - April 18th, The Open at Rose Creek - April 30th.

Results:

Championship:  Playing in 3, 2010 tournaments with two wins and a National Championship qualifying 3rd place finish at The Classic at the Payne Stewart Golf Club Major , Brad Christianson from Tulsa whipped up on the course and the field carding an even par 72.  Christianson's card included 5 bogie's and 5 birdies to go along with a steady 8 pars to take the trophy. 2nd place finisher Douglass Duke, also from Tulsa par'd the 18th hole to stay one stroke ahead of Pauls Valley player, Brandon Henry who finished 3rd.

Palmer:  Far south central Oklahoma golfer, Jim Payne from Burneyville debated making the trip with traveling partner, Don Shuggart but made the best of it taking the Palmer flight by 4 strokes over hometown Broken Arrow resident Allen Sawvel.  Oklahoma City's Hank Darcey and Darren Montgomery along with another Broken Arrow resident David McDaniel tied for 3rd with McDaniel taking the scorecard playoff for the last gift card award.

Hogan:  Muldrow, OK player Kriby Rogers picked up his 3rd win of the 2011 points season by one stroke over Stigler's Chris Blankenship.  Blankenship fared better that Rogers over the 5th-8th holes but couldn't stay ahead after Kirby pared the final 3 holes.  Newcomer Travis Klein from Del City had the lone birdie on the 6th hole rounded out the top 3 only two strokes out of the lead.

Senior Hogan:  Two years departed from a disqualification at Emerald Falls for a mixup on the hazard lines, Tahelquah's Jim Crawford made amends with his second win on the Am Tour. 2008 National Champion, Kelly Smith from Sentinel couldn't overcome a tough stretch on the front nine finishing in the 2nd spot two strokes clear of Mike Johnson from Tahlequah. 

Sarazen:  The second flight trophy going back to Tahequah, Christian Abels stayed clear western Oklahoman Robert Lakey from Sayre by two strokes.  Abels first win of his Am Tour career solidified the lead after Lakey tripled the par 5 - 18th hole. Denver tour player Tony Solano from Aurora, CO rounded out the top three.

Jones:  Fairview's, K.C. Montgomery picked up his first win of the season and fourth of his career shooting 16 over 88. Montgomery, not unscathed on the 5th - 8th hole stretch birdied the 11th in his win over Loyd Welch of McAlester.  Welch's heroics chopping out a perfect layup from the water on the 18th wasn't enough to make up ground on KC, but did get to cool off from the heat.  First time player Eric Einarsson from Tulsa finished in the show spot.

Snead:  Jerime Parker from Blanchard thought twice about playing after impending work issues kept him occupied but in the end was able to focus on the job at hand, taking his first win in his first attempt on the Am Tour. Three time tour winner, Rick Henthorn finished in 2nd over Checotah's Scott Bundrick.

Kicking Bird Challenge - Recap

Record Turnout - 63 Tee it Up For Oklahoma Opener!

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (March  19, 2011)   Friday night 10:00 pm news forecasted east winds at 5-8 mph with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.  Neither happened, we arrived to skies that looked like they may contain some moisture but none of it came out way and the 20-30mph winds blew steady until all the groups were off the tee.  The wind did subside but not until many of the early groups had made the turn.

In the end, 63 players from Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas made the call to the tees to compete at the Kicking Bird Challenge, in Edmond, OK.   Fast greens and great conditions for this time of year gave both new and old members alike a challenge worthy of the Oklahoma opener.  

Todd Chapman had a career low round to take the crystal Tournament Champion, presented by Labor Finders, Trophy with him back to Tulsa.

Results:

Championship Flight – It took 21 holes for Brandon Henry of Pauls Valley to pick up his 2nd career Am Tour win repeating on his Edmond Summer Classic win at Kicking Bird last July.  Henry birdied the par 3 third to win the playoff over Jeff Boyer from Oklahoma City in Boyer's first event on the tour.  Sapulpa's Curt Howard took the lead after his 16th hole birdie but feel one stroke behind after a double bogie 6 on the 17th.
  

Palmer Flight – In his first event on the tour, Yukon's Joseph Hendix took home the win with a birdie on the 18th hole to edge out Brad Cooper from Lawton. Allan Sawvel from Broken Arrow finished in the show position.

Senior Palmer Flight - David McDaniel from Broken Arrow picked up his third win on the tour by two stokes over Norman's William McConnell, Jimmy Westfall from Oklahoma City and Texhoma, TX Mel Yates all tied in the 2nd spot.

Hogan Flight –  Tulsa's Todd Chapman made his 7th win on the Am Tour a memorable one.  Chapman started out on the front nine with a up and down 4 over par but then got on a birdie string starting at the ninth, for his personal best score of 2 over par 72.  Brook Lister also from Tulsa and newcommer Ryan Coventon knotted it up for 2nd.  Muldrow's Kirby Rogers made a run with birdies on the 17th and tough 18th hole to equal Piedmont's Jason Conner one stroke back tied for 4th. 
 

Senior Hogan Flight - Another first time winner, newcommer Randy Sullivan from Oklahoma City, shot an 81,  one stroke clear of Abilene, TX Ed Dye also a first year player from the Dallas Tour.  Oklahoma City's Art Wiles, rounded out the top 3 just 2 outside the top spot in his first start as well.  

Sarazen Flight –  Cheyenne, OK's Allan Barnett bested Tim Mathis from Edmond in the first playoff hole, the second playoff of the day.  Mathis finished 1 over par over the last 3 holes to get himself in that playoff.  Barnett, with double bogies on the 1st and 18th holes went +4 over the other 16 holes to fire a 78.  Sayre's, Robert Lakey shot an 83 to stay in front of 4th place players, Craig Merrill from the Arkansas Tour and Scott Word from Bethany.

Jones Flight – Dallas Tour player, Ricky Gates from Arlington, TX took home the trophy over McAlesters, Loyd Welch with Oklahoma City's Gary Chrisman rounding out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight - Ron Hardy from Lewisville, TX made his trip up I-35 worth his while picking up his first win of the season. Hardy also a Dallas Tour member, started out hot, shooting 2 over par on the front nine stumbled a bit on the back but the start was enough to stay clear of new member Houston native Chris Manahan from Oklahoma City.  Jerry Hardin, from Yukon finished one stroke back from Manahan to finish in third.

Snead Flight – Checotah's Scott Bundrick shot his season's best round 87 to take the 1st place honors over Rick Henthorn from Yukon.  Fort Worth's, Doug Pritchett, one of the four players to travel from the Dallas Tour finished in the 3rd spot.

Notice to Contestants - Kicking Bird Challenge

NOTICE TO CONTESTANTS

This competition shall be governed by the current USGA Rules of Golf. The following Local Rules & Definitions shall also be in effect. Disregard all Local Rules & Definitions posted in the golf shop or on the course scorecard. Unless otherwise noted, the penalty for breach for a local rule or condition is two strokes.

TEEING GROUNDS:     

Championship / Palmer  – GOLD   

Senior Palmer / Hogan / Senior Hogan / Sarazen  – BLUE

Jones / Senior Jones / Snead – WHITE

Play will be from the designated tee markers and not necessarily the scorecard yardages.

STARTING TIME - RULE 6-3:   It is the responsibility of the player to be at the correct starting hole 10 minutes in advance of the start time. A 2-stroke penalty will be assessed to any player not ready to play at his/her starting time. Note to rule 6-3 and optional condition in appendix 1. If a player arrives after his group has played their 2nd shots, the player shall be disqualified.

SkyCaddie PACE OF PLAY: 4:30    Each group is individually responsible for maintaining and policing their groups pace of play. The finishing time for each hole is located on each scorecard. Players may inform another contestant that he/she is the cause of the group being out of position as a courtesy to that player. Rules Officials are not required to notify groups that they are out of position

·         For the 1st group, a 1-stroke penalty will be assessed for failing to complete the front or back nine in 2 hours 15 minutes or less

·         For all subsequent groups, a 1-stroke penalty will be assessed to any group failing to complete their 9th hole in 2 hours and 15 minutes and within 14 minutes of the group in front of them

·         1-stroke penalty will be assessed for any group playing in 4:30+ and finishing 14+ minutes behind the group in front of them.

RULE 3-3:  For any ruling question or doubt as to procedure please invoke Rule 3-3.  Rule 3-3 is announcing your intention to play two (2) balls and declare to your competitors which ball you are playing in accordance with USGA rules - complete the hole with both balls, and bring to the attention of the tournament committee before you turn in your scorecard. 

CELL PHONES: Cell phones are permitted but must be in the “silent” or “quiet” position

ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Electronic devices such as iPods and MP3 players are prohibited during tournament play. A breach of this rule is cause for disqualification

LIMITATION ON GOLF BALLS: Each player should put an identification mark on his ball and alert his fellow competitors of such. The one ball rule is not in effect (players cannot substitute a golf ball during a hole unless it is lost out of bounds or lost in a hazard)

THE BALL WILL BE PLAYED DOWN THROUGH THE GREEN  - EMBEDDED BALL RULE IS IN EFFECT

OUT OF BOUNDS:  Defined by the inside edge of the boundary fence is surrounding the golf course and the fence surrounding the driving range.  The driving range tee is also considered out of bounds.  All indoor and outdoor tennis courts are also considered out of bounds.

WATER HAZARDS:  All water hazards are lateral water hazards and are defined by red lines or stakes. 

GROUND UNDER REPAIR:

·         Areas defined by white lines - Staked or tagged trees

·         Irrigation repair areas /Tire ruts caused by maintenance vehicles

OBSTRUCTIONS:  The maintenance building and surrounding structures left of #11, the rain shelters, the halfway house, the rock structured tee boxes on holes #5 - #6, the man made drainage pipe northeast of #5 green (players must agree ball went in), the pavilion, and the storage sheds behind #9 green.  The player is entitled to free relief if stance or swing is interfered with.   The fan on #5 is the only obstruction where line of sight relief is also granted.

BALL DROPS ON #8 AND #9 ARE NOT IN EFFECT:

RULE 27-2:  If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard, to save time a player may play another ball provisionally.  Be sure to notify your pairing the difference in the two balls.

PRACTICE BETWEEN HOLES PROHIBITED:  Note 2  to Rule-7 & Optional Condition in Appendix I shall be in effect.  Two stroke penalty at the next hole, or if it’s the last hole of the stipulated round, one stroke at that hole. 

DISCONTINUANCE OF PLAY:  Note under Rule 6-8b and Optional Condition as prescribed in Appendix 1 shall be in effect.  All practice areas are closed during suspension for a dangerous situation until the Committee has declared them open.  A player using such practice areas will be subject to a penalty of disqualification. 

SCORECARD:  Return signed and attested scorecard to the scoring area immediately upon completion of play.  Each member of the group must be present to present their scorecards.  The scorecard is deemed to be returned once the player has left the scoring area. Penalty for breach of this condition – Disqualification. 

USE OF ELECTRONIC MEASURING DEVICES: The use of electronic yardage or distance measuring devices is permitted during all rounds.  Devices that measure wind speed, direction, and elevation changes are not allowed. 

RULES COMMITTEE:  Any and all GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour staff member.  Kicking Bird “professional” staff will also be able to make rulings on any “local” rules that are not noted in the above notice to contestants.

Oklahoma Members Qualify for National Championships @ The Texas Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Horseshoe Bay, TX (March 6, 2011)  Over 180 players took to the beautiful Horseshoe Bay Resort over the weekend with National Championship qualifications in mind.  Battling the winds and cold temperatures on Saturday that gave way to the light breezes and sunny skies on Sunday those spots were still up for grabs as the players made the turn for the final nine holes.

In the end, Oklahoma Tour members, Mel Yates from Texhoma, TX in the Senior Palmer Flight and  Hogan Flight player Ernie DeBruler from Wichita, KS got call for the 2011 National Championships in late September.

Both players teed off in the final pairings on Sunday with Ernie sitting in 2nd after day one and Yates the leader in the clubhouse.

Ernie started off his round hot with a birdie on the 2nd hole and would play the front nine in 2 over par.  The back nine would be the menace that kept him out of the winners circle, but held on to finish tied for 2nd place by shaving 4 strokes off his first round.

Yates, the defending Texas Open Champion, was not able to keep pace with a hot Danny Nichols from Mansfield, TX who shoot a final round 77 that tied the tournament low score.

Next up for the Oklahoma Tour is the Kicking Bird Challenge on March 19th.  Be sure to get your entry in early as we already have a Oklahoma Tour record turnout registered.

9 Oklahoma Players Travel South for the Texas Open

Oklahoma Group joins 180 players from around the country.

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (February 27, 2011)  The Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay Resort ,  will be contested this coming weekend with 9 Oklahoma Tour members making the trip south.

Horseshoe Bay Resort in the Texas hill country, located one hour northwest of Austin is nestled along Lake LBJ.  Two picturesque golf courses,  Ram Rock and Apple Rock will host the first of three Major events in the south Central Region as play gets underway on Saturday, March 5th.

Howard Wins @ Redstone

Scott R Chilcutt, DFW Tour (February 12, 2011)  Oklahoma tour member Curt Howard from Sapulpa, OK shot a 4 over par 76 to take the Championship Flight Title at the Redstone Spring Classic on the Houston Tour.  Edmond's Al Swanson also took advantage of the warm up in the south to take 3rd.

Redstone is just weeks away from Shell Houston Open is the site of the Golf Channel Am Tour  - "Texas Shootout" major two day event the first weekend of August.
